Dumortierite is a rare, fibrous, aluminum boro-silicate mineral. It's found in the form of masses, small prismatic crystals, or as fibrous inclusions within quartz. Dumortierite is usually a dark or navy blue, but can also be found as green, brown, violet, and even light pink.
Dumortierite has distinctive physical properties, including:
A range of blue colors
Vitreous to pearly luster
Orthorhombic crystal system
High hardness (7-8 on the Mohs scale)
Chatoyant or fibrous appearance
